After all the recent negativity, the CWG 2010 sprung to life with absolute glitterati at the opening ceremony. Right from a 7-year-old Keshava playing the tabla with 100 percussionists to the crowd giving Pakistani contingent a rousing reception to Hariharan’s unique Swagatham to Rahmania sweeping with Jiyo Utho Bado Jeeto; it was an evening to remember for India . Welcome CWG 2010.
It was a big bang start to the Commonwealth Games 2010 in New Delhi after a blockbuster opening ceremony, which was nothing short of an extravaganza. Back in Melbourne at the end of 2006, when India was handed over the rights as the next hosts, there was a huge bollywood-style blitzkrieg in Melbourne . And today showed exactly why.
Suresh Kalmadi booed
When Suresh Kalmadi first came out to speak, there was mixed response from the stands. While Kalmadi was booed from the stands, when he mentioned the name of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit during his speech, the crowd received it with a massive applause. Kalmadi also made sure he thanked Sonia Gandhi and Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the same tone.
The special moment came from Prince Charles when he read out the message from the baton, that of Queen Elizabeth. The Queen said in her message, " It is particularly fitting that the 2010 Commonwealth Games are being held in India . I firmly believe that if countries can compete for sports, they can firmly come together for peace and togetherness. India will be an experience of a lifetime." Prince Charles later declared the games open.
'Jiyo Utho Bado Jeeto'
This was followed by the 'great Indian journey.' For all of us in India , everyday is a beautiful journey. Be it the rickshaw-wallah or the honking bus or the Mercedes Benz, India is a grand journey. This segment made the best use of the aerostat which lay skywards since the beginning of the ceremony. The aerostat came with really special images of India that were elegantly reflected onto the ground and through the stadium. India again showcased in a majestic manner
If you thought wow, wait a minute! The real moment came just after that. It was a moment to celebrate India and one man who drives the mood of a nation was there again. Jai Ho Rahman! He weaved his magic at the Oscars and now at the CWG 2010. The theme song 'Jiyo Utho Bado Jeeto' was a true masterpiece.
That set the mood for the rest of the night as well with the opening ceremony leading the way for what should be an Indian blockbuster over the next 11 days.
But we must remember that if we have got great opening it does’nt mean that we had great plans. We must not forget those corrupted personalities who have left no stone to make India hell.
And at the last a great joke of this decade……
I hope after the games the punishment is waiting for the corrupted politicians and officers...
